Ultimate Guide to the Art of Doing Nothing
Hello, everyone. Welcome to the lazy world. I am your one and only procrastination guru, ‘ Utsab ‘. Today, I will teach everyone about the heroic act of doing absolutely nothing. At first, let’s give ourselves a big round of applause for doing absolutely nothing today, the day before, and the upcoming days. Let me tell you about procrastination first. It is nothing but an act of delaying tasks, even when you know it might lead to some serious consequences. And this Utsab is exactly the procrastination guru. Now let’s jump toward our absolute favourite (Doing Nothing).
Have you ever felt guilty about doing nothing the whole day? Don’t feel guilty. You can trust me, it’s brain exercise. Let others hustle, let them run marathons of competition. You sit back and relax, and your brain needs it. As a matter of fact, doing nothing is not just timepass, it’s making space for yourself. And that space is for thinking and creating new, brilliant ideas.
In Dutch language ‘ Niksen ‘ word is used to identify the skill of ‘ Doing nothing ‘
Have others told you lazy when you relax? Are you afraid to do nothing because someone might tease or scold you for being lazy? So, next time anyone calls you lazy, tell them you are just following the old ritual of mind relaxation. Take rest, stay healthy, and reduce your stress through relaxation.
Benefits of Doing Nothing
- Mental Boost (Brain Reset): Our small mind is processing a lot of information. We aren’t always aware of how the brain functions, but we sure know it’s a lot painful to constantly work. It’s better to give our brain a chance to rest, process good thoughts. Tell me what’s better than a well-rested and boosted mind. Doing Nothing boosts your mind, it allows new and good information to process.
- Health recovery: A good sleep of 8 hours is key for recovery. We all know, good and sound sleep boosts our immune system, reduces mental fatigue. Most of us might not be aware, but deep sleep helps to regulate our stress hormones. Aren’t these enough reasons that motivate you to do nothing and take some rest?
- Boosts Creativity: Being well-rested surely pays off. According to your guru, Utsab, a good break makes you more focused, creative, and engaged. If doing nothing boosts your creativity, then why not go grab a pillow and take some rest? Use some math, good rest time = good creativity.
Doing Nothing isn’t wasting your time, rather it’s recharging your battery.
Will you surely take rest, after getting such good information on the benefits of Doing Nothing? Let’s go into my daily routine and learn to do nothing carefully.
A day of Nothingness
Let’s make it more interesting by using the timetable of my daily routine, which all of you(my disciples) are going to follow.
- 8:00 am: Don’t even think about waking up this early. This is just my alarm clock. Well, I have to wake up for 20 seconds to turn it off.
- 9:00 am: Good Morning, everyone. A well-rested and sound sleep of 9 hours makes you energetic whole day. But who cares about energy? We are just going to do nothing. Waking up slowly is a key to success. Grab a bottle of water and drink it.
- 9:30 am: Let’s start the day with coding a few lines. Ohh sorry !! We are meant to do nothing as my routine. So let’s just open Instagram and scroll through reels for half an hour.
- 10:00 am: A good meal after waking up is always refreshing. So let’s head to the kitchen to grab lunch and enjoy it.
- 12:00 pm: Now it’s time to lie on a bed and recall good memories and smile, thinking about the future. Lying on a bed watching the ceiling is the best idea for relaxation.
- 3:00 pm: It was a good nap during the afternoon. That helps a lot with my creative thinking. Now, let’s grab some snacks and enjoy the scenery outside.
- 5:00 pm: Scrolling through social media to find some memes and to share them with friends.
- 7:00 pm: Let’s conclude the day, thinking about how the day was. And, how different was it from yesterday?
- 10:00 pm: It’s relaxation time watching some comedy videos and reels.
- 12:00 am: Perfect sleeping time. The day was a lot hectic. Today’s agenda is completed. A day doing absolutely nothing.

Voices of youths on Doing Nothing
Boredom encourages creative thinking. Statements like “An empty mind is devils workshop” often create the illusion and accuse boredom as wrong, but it is nothing but mental stillness; a state of mental calmness without any incessant thinking, which is just another definition of meditation. In a society where everybody yearns for continuous dopamine hit through social media and short bursts of other entertaining content, mind becomes overworked, overstimulated, dull, distracted and disconnected from the present and reality. Boredom enables your mind to be present, cuts off dopamine induced over stimulation and reduces incessant thinking so much so that sometimes it even reducing anxiety.

Personally, as an ambitious person, doing nothing feels like chewing bubblegum, sweet and tasty, but after many long “Nothing Days”, it’s hard to spit out and I can’t bear the taste either. The absurdity of doing nothing feels heavy. Sometimes, even the things I usually enjoy feel distant and hard to connect with.

Justification for Doing Nothing
Laziness is logic, and frankly speaking, productivity is just propaganda. People have just wrong misconception about doing nothing. They feel doing nothing is lazy, selfish, and unproductive. Come on, they are just working on their brains, that’s what’s important to them. Shall we look into some justifications for Doing Nothing?
- Your time! = Your Output: We all agree on this point. The time and effort we put into our work are not equivalent to the resulting output. Life is not like a program; you code a few lines and compile, and run to extract the desired output.
- Doing Nothing Is Doing Something: Our brain is in default mode, inside our body, all systems are always functional. It does not depend on what we do with our physical body on productivity.
- The world just works fine without you doing anything: Take some deep breaths. Don’t hurry, the world is not going anywhere with you working and doing something. The Earth spins just fine without you as well.
Urge To Do Something
The urge to do something is for so-called “productive” person. But my disciple follow my path, be the chillest person in the world.
The urge to do something always comes to our minds to be productive and feel useful. Some might argue that doing something keeps us from feeling distracted. Yes, doing something might distract us, but remember, staying busy is also not good for your health. It’s essential to balance your work with resting. Rest isn’t laziness, it’s healing. For Example,” A workaholic man works daily 8 hours in the office. It’s frustrating, the work pressure, salary increment issue, and family problems are a lot to deal with for a common man. Hence, he should manage his time with his family, colleagues, and others. Taking a constant break can effectively help him grow.”
So now everyone knows the balance is very essential in life. The urge to do something exactly contradicts the theory of doing nothing. Moreover, doing something also includes physical activity like exercise, playing sports, and so on. This boosts your stamina and physical health. According to the WHO, 31% of adults aren’t active enough because people are spending more time just sitting or doing very little. A 2002 WHO bulletin warned that inactivity may be among the top 10 causes of death and disability, with millions of deaths attributed annually.
Do you have any more excuses? Or the justification for doing Nothing works just fine for you.

My opinion would vary a lot from yours because I believe there is no one(few in some cases)who has the capability to do nothing. Even when you are not doing anything of value, you still scroll through your phone and have all sorts of thoughts while the chattering never ceases.
To do nothing would be the absolute pinnacle of human capability , if we look at it from a spiritual perspective. Though I wouldnot deny the fact that there are people who have experienced boredom and wish to lie idly without having any problems. Some also want to remain disconnected from the societal nuisances, wanting to live alone. There are over a million such people, commonly known as ‘hikikamori’ still living a lonesome life in Japan.
The nature of humans always pushes them to pursue something, have a purpose or doing something productive. That’s what keeps the life going despite the hardships since without them we wouldnot know what to do. When we say we would do a task later, we are doing so because we have no interest in it. That’s how a procrastinator is born. On the bright side, it could open a gate for our boundless potential to unleash itself. But we know what is very commonly happening because of our perspective of doing nothing. Doing nothing is a chance to grow too. To look at oneself, and identify ones strengths and attributes that would cause them to lead a happy life.
Life needs meaning , it desires purpose. Because without it ,most would have a hard time dealing with their own existence. So,would it be better to become a procrastinator? You must ask it to confirm…
